What if there was an FA Cup for College Football? - ROUND 3 - 128 New Teams Enter, 256 Teams Battle and 128 survive!

Welcome back! If you don’t know what is happening here, it is something ridiculous, and I really hope you enjoy it. If you missed Round 1 & 2 of the Sickos Committee College Football FA Cup, I have linked them for you here below.

In the first version of this, I asked you to suspend all disbelief immediately. I needed you to dismiss any notions that this would never happen and just go with me on this journey. This is a fantasy college football world, and I wanted you along for the ride. So make sure you check your notions of realness at the door.

Here was how we broke it down for the 764 teams in the College Football FA Cup. Each round draw will be a random draw until we set a hard bracket with the final 16 teams. So remember when you saw teams advance, and it appeared they would meet up in the next round?? Yeah, that will not happen. Everyone is thrown back into a pot until the Round of 16.

Here is the order of the Rounds below:

  • Round 1 - 504 Teams Enter = 252 Teams Advance.

  • Round 2 - 252 Winners From Round 1 + 4 New Entrants = 128 Teams Advance

  • Round 3 - 128 Winners From Round 2 + 128 New Entrants = 128 Teams Advance (WE ARE HERE, OH SO MUCH LEFT TO GO BUT NOW WE GOT SOME FBS AND FCS FLAVOR IN HERE)

  • Round 4 - 128 Winners from Round 3 + 128 New Entrants = 128 Teams Advance

  • Round 5 - 128 Winners from Round 4 = 64 Teams Advance

  • Round 6 - 64 Winners from Round 5 = 32 Teams Advance

  • Round 7 - 32 Winners from Round 6 = 16 Teams Advance

  • 16 Team Bracket is Set for the Final Path to the College Football FA Cup

  • Round 8 - 16 Winners from Round 7 = 8 Teams Advance to the Quarterfinals

  • Round 9 - 8 Winners from Round 8 = 4 Teams Advance to the Semifinals

  • Round 10 - 4 Winners from Round 9 = 2 Teams Advance to the Championship

  • Round 11 - College Football FA Cup Final played at the Independence Bowl

Now, for Round 1, we did a completely random draw for the winners with our random score generator. We wanted some element of whimsy mixed with some chaos for Round 1. We really don’t know what teams would take this seriously.

  • Would they let the backups start?

  • Try to rest all their star players for this tourney?

  • Would they go with a heavily rotated squad, as they sometimes do in England?

In our minds, this College Football FA Cup is going on alongside the regular season. For Round 2, we slightly tweaked things using the SP+ and make the favorites ever so slightly favored in the random score generator. (Hopefully you didn’t notice it.) Meaning, we think the longer the tourney goes on, more and more teams will actually be taking it seriously.

However, a Round 3 team in FCS or FBS may prioritize their conference or winning their games to try to make the FCS Playoffs or a bowl game at 6-6. We really don’t know what a payout would be for advancing each round here because this is completely hypothetical where everything is made up and the scores don’t matter (yeah, right, y'all still kind of take this seriously). It is really a gigantic waste of my time, but it's the offseason, and I have to keep busy somehow, or I would likely go insane. No football makes the Commish go crazy, but thankfully the CFL is ongoing to ease my mind a little bit. Go Riders.

For Round 3, the tweaks may be a little more noticeable, as a team ranked in the 700s likely wouldn’t stand a chance against a Division I team, but a team ranked in the 400s still may have an outside chance. Ok, enough talking, it’s time for some bracket action.

ROUND 3 - 128 new entrants, 256 teams battle and 128 teams survive!

At least I only have to do this many brackets for this and the next round.

Also, remember the big schools could be playing away at the smaller schools, just like in the FA CUP!

Bracket 1 of 16, I’m so very sorry Kent State. That hypothetical extra point you missed, will sting for a long time.

Bracket 2 of 16, We will have a Concordia moving on to Round 4!!

CONCORDIA NEBRASKA IS STILL GOING!!

Bracket 3 of 16, SUNY Brockport is moving on! Also we had a 4 spot in here.

Look at that Brockport helmet, the Eagle talon is around the B

Bracket 4 of 16, Tusculum with the biggest upset in here.

GIANT TU on the Tusculum Pioneers Helmets

Bracket 5 out of 16, East Texas Baptist with the Biggest Upset in this section

Bracket 6 of 16, Dartmouth wins the battle of Dartmouths. PLYMOUTH STATE WITH A GIGANTIC UPSET!!

Former UMass HC Don Brown’s First Head Coaching gig!

Bracket 7 of 16, ULM MENTIONED (thank god they survived)

NW Missouri State’s Logo

Bracket 8 of 16, Texas Permian Basin takes down D2 Power Harding

Frostburg State Logo

Bracket 10 out of 16, nothing too crazy here, don’t worry crazy is coming…

Bracket 11 out of 16, St. Olaf! Still going, I guess making the Sickos Cartoon gives you a special power in this tourney!

St. Olaf’s mascot has an Axe???????

Bracket 12 out of 16, Olivet Nazerene takes down Tulsa!! NICE win UTEP

Olivet Nazerene logo beveled!!

Bracket 13 out of 16, SOUTHERN VIRGINIA AND SHIPPENSBURG MOVING ON!! Also, Concordia got a 1 point safety for their only score!!!

Shippensburg Stadium

Shippensburg Logo beveled. It’s a ship! Can you believe that???

Bracket 14 out of 16, DOWN GOES PURDUE!! CONCORDIA-CHICAGO WITH A MASSIVE UPSET!! Another 4 spot in here too!

Concordia-Chicago’s Logo beveled and will likely haunt Purdue fans dreams forever.

Concordia-Chicago’s stadium combo, track, baseball, tennis complex. Purdue had to come here and play the game in my mind and got distracted by all the other activities.

Bracket 15 out of 16, Our final presidential named university (I think) Franklin Pierce is eliminated. Down goes the Gadsen Purchase!

Bracket 15 of 16, MARTIN LUTHER TAKES DOWN AN FCS SCHOOL!!! BOWDOIN TOO!!!

Martin Luther runs down a hill, just like Clemson! right? right? Clemson fans show up to my house to try to fight me for this joke.

Bracket 16 of 16, whew thank goodness I am done with these brackets for this week. One more time for all the insane brackets next week
