Why haven't these teams played yet?? Part 4 of ???
This is Part 4 of another off-season installment exploring the history of college football and the Commish wish-casting some more weirdness into college football. After all, this is what we do here at the Sickos Committee.
Throughout the history of the nearly or over 150 years of college football, we’d like to think nearly every Power 5 team has played each other at least once in their history. Well, we know that is not the case. The reasons all of these teams have never played vary on a case by case basis.
We want to highlight some match-ups that have never happened and then break down why we want the game to happen. Again, none of this makes sense or is intended to make sense but let’s explore this in a however many part journey. Also, we want these games to be a home and home series, none of that neutral site nonsense but we will explore a potential bowl match-up. We may have explored some match-ups not listed on this part in previous parts and we linked them here.

Penn State vs Virginia Tech
Distance between Schools: 370 Miles. 5 hours and 45 minutes of driving.
Possible Bowl Tie-ins: CFP, NY6, Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl, ReliaQuest Bowl.
Fan Base Clash or Match: Leaning match slightly over clash. Sure there are some differences in the fan bases but I’d rate this a fan base match around 51% match and 49% clash. Both are in middle of nowhere towns in their respective states and both have really awesome fan traditions. (The Whiteout and Enter Sandman).
Sickos Potential Rating: 2.5 out of 5. Given the current state of both programs, we’d lean towards Penn State winning this one but who truly knows. There is a the bonus of a former Penn State Coordinator Brent Pry coaching the Virginia Tech team now. This adds a little juice to the game but just a little.
Sickos Urgency Rating: 5 out of 5. How the hell has this game not happened already? In 2020, it was supposed to happen but Covid got in the way. Also, in 2013, they had a meeting set up for 2021 and 2022 but that didn’t happen. Also, it was supposed to happen in 2025 but since the 2020 meeting didn’t occur, that 2025 meeting has been cancelled AGAIN. Honestly, I’m very surprised this game hasn’t happened and doesn’t have it’s own rivalry trophy that’s nearly 100 years old. Maybe a weird half turkey/half lion trophy. I swear I’ve heard Brad Nessler’s voice saying its the Hokies vs the Nittany Lions before…but that could have been in the old NCAA video game. This is the classic will they play or won’t they play. It’s you and your friend cancelling and rescheduling plans over and over and over, swearing you will hang out one day but work has gotten really busy and you can’t afford to take time off. Just get it over with and play already.
Alabama vs Iowa
Distance between Schools: 739 miles. About an 11 hour and 15 minute drive.
Possible Bowl Tie-ins: CFP, NY6, Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, ReliaQuest Bowl, TransPerfect Music City Bowl.
Fan Base Clash or Match: Going with Clash. I don’t see Bama fans and Hawkeyes fans matching. I could be wrong though but I just don’t see it. Although, I did find some sweet Black and Yellow houndstooth fabric…
Sickos Potential Rating: 5 out of 5. Just imaging a world where the Iowa defense forces Bama into a punting and field position battle. Ferentz and Saban both looking angry on each sideline. No team can get anything going offensively and then it comes down to Bama trying to kick field goals… Ah the Commish can dream right?
Sickos Urgency Rating: 1.5 out of 5. I don’t need this one right now. Iowa fans likely don’t want this one right now. Maybe this one can occur when Kirk and Nick both retire but for now, I can wait.
Florida State vs Northwestern
Distance between Schools: 975 miles. About 15 hours of driving.
Possible Bowl Tie-ins: CFP, NY6, Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl, ReliaQuest Bowl.
Fan Base Clash or Match: Clash. Florida State was a former teacher’s college and Northwestern has the Medill School of Journalism. That’s about as much as they have in common.
Sickos Potential Rating: 3 out of 5. Just trying to imagine Ryan Field at night trucking in their temporary lights with Florida State fans in the stadium makes me smile. This is just a weird game that would be a Sickos Watch but could get upgraded to a Warning soon enough.
Sickos Urgency Rating: 4 out of 5. This game has no business happening which is why we need it. It’s weird and doesn’t make any sense at all. However, If it happened in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl or Duke’s Mayo Bowl you can bet your ass I would be booking my flight immediately. Hell, I’d even use my saved airline miles to try to upgrade to first class.
Arizona State vs Indiana
Distance between Schools: 1,673 miles. 25 hours of driving fun times.
Possible Bowl Tie-ins: CFP, NY6.
Fan Base Clash or Match: Clash. I don’t think Indiana and Arizona State have much in common at all. Except both of their states have an I and A in their names.
Sickos Potential Rating: 6 out of 5. This has the makings of that weird game in Week 2 or 3 of the season that has to occur at 11pm EST since its so ungodly hot in Tempe, Arizona. This game spells weirdness due to taking place at this insane hour. Also, this would be one of those weird Friday night games in Bloomington, Indiana. We’re all for this and we don’t know what would happen or what crazy uniforms Arizona State would wear.
Sickos Urgency Rating: 5 out of 5. Set this up for 2024. Make this happen already. Give me the Sun Devil vs a Hoosier now. Does this game make sense? No. Give it to us and it’d likely have a shot for Sickos Game of The Week.
Nebraska vs Kentucky
Distance between Schools: 774 Miles. 11 hours and 15 minutes of driving straight through Louisville, St. Louis and Kansas City.
Possible Bowl Tie-ins: CFP, NY6, Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, ReliaQuest Bowl, TransPerfect Music City Bowl.
Fan Base Clash or Match: Slight Clash. I feel like the Kentucky Basketball and Nebraska Football fan match a little but throw in the Kentucky Football fan? Slight clash overall but have some matching tendencies, I think. This one is tough to gauge.
Sickos Potential Rating: 10 out of 5. This is one of the most Music City Bowl match-ups that could ever happen. Both of these teams seem to be on similar levels at the moment but with higher aspirations. (I said seem, don’t yell at me Huskers and Wildcats fans, I love y’all.) Something about this game tells me this would come down to the 4th quarter and someone makes a backbreaking mistake that costs them the game.
Sickos Urgency Rating: 10 out of 5. The Blue vs the Red is just a great uniform combo. Also, the pocket of red or blue standing out in the opposing team’s home stadiums would be amazing to see. This is a BIG TEN vs SEC match-up where either conference fan base would form their opinions on how much better their conference is over the other conference. Just typing that sentence was funny. But you totally know there would be certain sections of fans of a Big Ten and SEC team claiming their conference is better because either Nebraska or Kentucky won this game. GIVE US THIS GAME AND THE ENSUING ONLINE DEBATING!!
