As we wrote previously, the Sickos Committee, didn’t start publicly until 2021. We did exist in 2020, but just in a Discord server which is now a part of our Patreon for $5 per month. So, we have only named five Sickos National Champions:

  • 2020 - Michigan (internally within our Discord, but our first tweet was this)

  • 2021 - Nebraska

  • 2022 - Iowa

  • 2023 - Iowa

  • 2024 - Florida State

  • 2025 - Penn State

We just named UCF the Retroactive Sickos National Champions for 2017, Northwestern for 1981 and the entire Southwest Conference for 1994. And we’re continuing to try to name more retroactive champions through the offseason.

Now, we got to go back in time, 20 years ago. Back to a simpler time where conference still made sense. The season back then not so much..

THE 2006 SICKOS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP NOMINEES

  • Maryland 9-4

  • New Mexico State 4-8

  • ULM 5-6

  • Wake Forest 11-3

  • Purdue 8-6

  • Kentucky 8-5

  • Kent State 6-6

  • Iowa 6-7

  • Illinois 2-10

  • Kansas State 7-6

  • Hawaii 11-3

  • Boise State - 13-0

  • Oklahoma - 11-3

  • North Texas - 3-9

  • FIU 0-12

  • Miami (FL) 7-6

  • Kansas 6-6

  • Alabama 6-7

  • Duke 0-12

  • North Carolina 3-9

  • NC State 3-9

During the podcast episode, we discussed all the nominees and settled on a Top 5.

We will give you a little summary of each Top 5 team and have you cast your ballot for the Sickos National Champion. We will close the poll before our podcast episode on Sunday Night May 31st at 9pm CT and crown the 2006 Sickos National Champion when the episode comes out on Tuesday June 2nd. We will continue to this for each year this offseason if we get enough participation from you!

THE TOP 5 CANDIDATES FOR THE 2006 SICKOS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Keep in mind, we normally crown the National Champ before all the Bowl Games, so if possible, please factor in that with your vote but we understand it is a retroactive thing so it is pretty tough but try.

The Entire State of North Carolina

Honestly, this one started as only Wake Forest winning the ACC at 11-3. But the magnitude of Wake Forest winning the ACC in 2006 caused so much chaos in the state of North Carolina football, we just ended up nominating them all.

  • Wake Forest 11-3 - ACC Champs, went to the Orange Bowl and won the ACC Title game in a barn burner 9-6 over Georgia Tech. Barely beat 0-12 Duke by 1 point.

  • Duke 0-12 - I mean 0-12, lost to Wake by a point, lost to Richmond 13-0. Probably Sickos Game of the Year against UNC, 45-44 end of the year, lost by a point. Head Coach Ted Roof. 4 for 11 in FGs.

  • North Carolina 3-9 - Probably Sickos GOTY with Duke, 45-44 end of the year, won by a point Three wins were over FCS Furman, NC State (23-9), and Duke.

  • NC State 3-9 - only beat three ranked teams all year, #1 App State in FCS, #21 Boston College and #16 Florida State. Head Coach Chuck Amato.

  • App State 14-1 - Won the I-AA Title by beating UMass and their only loss was to NC State

  • East Carolina 7-6 - Coached by Skip Holtz and went to Birmingham for the PapaJohns.com Bowl.

  • Western Carolina 2-9 - Won first two games of the year and got ranked in FCS, then proceeded to lose 9 straight.

  • Elon 5-6 - Coached by Pete Lembo, current Buffalo Head Coach. Alternated wins and losses for nearly the entire year, had two losses in a row in the middle.

  • North Carolina A&T 0-11 - Shutout three times, highest point total in a single game was only 21 this year.

  • North Carolina Central 11-1 - Black National Champions, made the D-II Playoffs too about knocked out by a Fighting Okra.

North Carolina, what the hell was going on in 2006 with all your football teams??? Love it.

Boise State - 13-0

  • Yes, that Boise State team.

  • Head Coach Chris Peterson. Who called the Hook and Lateral or Ladder whatever your preferred nomenclature.

  • Jared Zabransky - 23 TDs, also what a damn fun name to say.

  • Ian Johnson, 1700+ yards - 25 TDs and scored the 2 point conversion then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend.

  • Beat Oklahoma in one of the most memorable games ever and truly put the “little guy” on the map.

  • From unranked to undefeated. Basically crushing everyone in their path with a classic game against Hawaii in season.

  • Seems like if the Committee was around we’d have been all over Boise State this year.

  • Enjoy the video and look away Oklahoma fans.

FIU 0-12

  • Only scored 115 points all year.

  • Had a Brawl with Miami

  • FIU lost to Miami 35-0 in that game and the fight has it’s own Wiki. FIU and Miami Brawl

  • The next day, 31 players from both schools — eighteen from FIU, thirteen from Miami — were handed one-game suspensions by their schools and conferences.

  • Played a 7OT game with North Texas where 16 Field Goals were attempted in 7 OTs that finished 25-22, which they lost due to a missed field goal.

  • Don’t worry I wrote an entire blog on that game too with a Seemingly Forgotten NCAA Record.

  • Started the year with four one possession losses, including two one point losses.

  • 11 lost fumbles, 15 interceptions.

  • Here are the rushing stats for FIU all year.

Hawaii 11-3

  • QB Colt Brennan - Rest in Peace. Just look at this stat line for the year. Absolute Insanity.

58 TDs and 12 INTs averaging nearly 400 yards a game.

  • HEAD COACH JUNE JONES

  • Lost to Mike Shula Alabama in his last year as head coach

  • Only other losses were to Boise State and Oregon State

  • Beat Arizona State in the Hawai’i Bowl

  • You know we’d be all over the Hawai’i Test this year and it would have been appointment football.

  • Also, shout out to Nate Ilaoa - 31 TOTAL TDS on the year.

    Maryland 9-4

  • Head Coach Ralph Friegen

  • They finished 9-4 but finished with a 0 Point Differential. 284 Points Scored and 284 Points Allowed. 5 Games over .500 but even on Point Differential.

  • All losses were to ranked teams, only one win over a ranked team (lost to no.5 West Virginia, no. 18 Georgia Tech, no. 20 Boston College, no. 20 Wake Forest; but beat no. 19 Clemson coached by Tommy Bowden)

  • Punter Adam Podlesh drafted at 101 in the 4th round by the Jags the next year! (42.9yd average punt in 2006)

  • Beat Purdue 24-7 in the Champs Sports Bowl which the wiki lists in the Aftermath of the bowl game this spurred Maryland to go to the Big Ten in 2014.

  • We have no idea why that playing Purdue in 2006 in the Champs Sports bowl has an Aftermath section stating Maryland announced they’d join the Big Ten in 2012. So, we’re crediting this bowl game in 2006 as the reason for why Maryland joined the Big Ten.

  • 26 turnovers on the year also.

  • One final thing, they forced 10 fumbles on the year. The Terps only recovered one of those.
