The Sickos Synopsis Week 7 - Featuring Cal/Colorado, New Mexico/New Mexico State, Baylor/WVU, NC State/Syracuse & Minnesota/Illinois.

Here at the Sickos Committee, we really love the Old-Timey newspaper headlines from college football games from the 1920s and earlier. We wanted to do a weekly recap of some randomly decided Sickos games in this Old-Timey style of writing for the fun of it. Just try to imagine an old school news reporter reading this aloud to you on an old transistor radio. Here are the headlines for Week 7.

Oct. 15th - Boulder, CO.
The courageous Cal Bears brought their boys to battle in Boulder against the winless Buffaloes. Colorado cut ties with their coach before their bye week and were ready to rumble against their Pac-12 conference mates. Cal and Colorado couldn’t capture any offensive momentum in the first half except for each team conjuring up a field goal attempt. Cal’s kick missed and Colorado’s kick was true, giving the Buffaloes a boost into halftime up 3-0. In the second half, the offenses continued to struggle for a bit until Cal captured their first lead with a 14 yard touchdown catch 7-3. Colorado continued to counter and crawl their way down Folsom Field and crashed into the end-zone for a 10-7 lead. Cal came back and kicked a field goal to tie the match at 10-10. The Buffaloes buoyant from a sparkling student section cheering their every instance with the ball forged forward for a field goal 13-10. The Bears battled back and kicked a field goal to knot the game up at 13-13 to send the game into overtime. Colorado took their first foray into the end-zone with a superhuman stretch by the wide receiver who was able to tip-tap a toe in-bounds while tumbling backwards, boosting the Buffaloes to a 20-13 lead in overtime. Cal attempted to answer but a fourth down pass plunged to the turf incomplete. Folsom Field flooded with frolicking fellows to fiesta for the first time in nearly twenty-four fortnights.

October 15 - Syracuse, NY
Of the remaining undefeated teams in college football the Syracuse Orange is among the most exciting this season. So, when the #15 NC State Wolfpack come into town seeking to end the unbeaten streak of the #18 Syracuse football team, a strong sustained safeguard lined up to keep the 0 in the loss column. The Orange received the opening Kickoff and drove directly downfield dashingly into the end-zone ending the stalemate that began the game. Following a trade of punts, the Wolfpack took a 12-play drive into Syracuse territory and kicked a FG, bringing the score to 7-3. On the following drive the men in orange pants proceeded posthaste positively putting the pigskin between the uprights for 3 more points to their already proven lead. The next three drives ended in punts, but then the Wolfpack defense decisively dissuaded their opponent with back-to-back Orange drives ending in interceptions. These stopped promising Syracuse drives and sent this game into the half with a score of 10-3. With the Wolfpack taking the kickoff in the second half they methodically measured and matriculated the ball in a 14 play 50-yard drive that ended with three points. But the Orange, obstinate obsessed on-time, on-brand, and on-the-move took a 13 play 78-yard drive into the end-zone after converting on 4th and 1 in the red zone. Looking to get back into the game the NC State players clad in all white went on a journey of 18 plays 56 yards but stalled out at the Orange 19 and kicked their third and final field goal of the game. But the Orange ended the threat with an explosive drive scoring the final points of the game, an electrifying entertaining encounter that Sean Tucker took 25 yards into the end-zone untouched, pushing the score to 24 – 9 which is where the contest ended. The Orange have upset NC State and are bowl bound and seeking sensational success soon in subsequent games this season.

October 15th - Champaign, IL
The Fighting Illini of Illinois, standing at 6-1 and welcoming the Minnesota Golden Gophers for their 75th meeting. The game’s scoring began immediately after on the opening drive where Illinois’ do-it-all back Chase Brown took a pass forty yards to open the scoring of the game. The back speedily scampered soundly superbly into the end-zone making the game 7-0. On the immediately preceding drive Minnesota threw their first of three turnovers terminating there to that tremendous first drive. After trading a pair of punts, the Illini went on a 15-play drive that ended with a field goal moving their lead to 10-0. Not to be outdone the Goldy’s Gang responded resplendently running ravenously behind Mo Ibrahim, who in his return had a fantastic day carrying the ball for 127 yards. On this drive he earned 44 of those yards on single play espousing efficient effort equals exceptionally egress. Tanner Morgan, QB for the Gophers punched it in on a 9-yard run cutting the lead to three. Holding a tenuous lead, the ingenious Illini set out on an odyssey owning offensive operation for 19 plays and 72 yards ending the first half’s scoring with a field goal bringing the score to 13-7 in favor of the Illini. Starting the second half the Gophers take the kickoff 92 yards to the Illini 4 setting up first and goal for the Gophers seeking their first lead of the contest. The men from Minnesota don’t disappoint and score immediately and after the extra point, take a 14-13 lead. At this point the Illini pour it on, scoring a touchdown on the ensuing drive that lasts 2 minutes and 49 seconds and ends with Illinois’ QB Tommy DeVito running the ball into the endzone. With the score 20-14 the Illinois never looked back. Causing consecutive conditions conducive to turnovers where the Gophers throw interceptions. This ended the threat the Gophers presented and sent the Men from Minneapolis home with their second loss of the season.

Oct. 13 - Morgantown, WV
The Baylor Bears found their way to their personal house of horrors in Morgantown, West Virginia to face the Mountaineers. Baylor bounced out to an early 17-7 lead and looked calm, cool and collected to capture their first ever win in Morgantown. The Mountaineers mounted a mini rally and tied the score up on a fortuitous and foreshadowing fumble return to tie the test at 17-17. The Bears battled and the Mountaineers muscled up to counter each other’s scores, continuously counting up the scoreboard in majestic Morgantown. The game seemed destined to be decided and determined on the final possession in a classic who has the ball last will win the game. The Mountaineers kicker, aptly named Legg, lightly lifted a twenty-two yard field goal through the uprights giving West Virginia the 43-40 lead with few precious ticks left. The clock counted down before Baylor could reply, sealing the win for West Virginia. The Mountaineers and the masses gathered to watch the game, joined together and joyously crooned the classic “Country Roads” after sending Baylor to an 0-6 record in Morgantown.

Oct. 15 - Las Cruces, NM
The New Mexico Lobos roamed down Interstate 25 to battle their bitter in-state rivals the New Mexico State Aggies in the Rio Grande Rivalry. The Lobos, winners of the past three rivalry games, leapt to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a cleverly kicked forty-four yard field goal. The Aggies answered with a timely twenty-two yard touchdown pass to take the lead 7-3. The Lobos bounced back and converted another field goal to slice the Aggies lead down to 7-6. Both teams traded missed kicks before halftime and the score remained the same. In the second half, fortuitous field position found the Aggies. Advantageous adventures arose and the crafty crew from Las Cruces carved their way to two timely touchdowns which elongated and extended their lead to 21-6. A bend but don’t break defense by the Aggies locked up the Lobos only allowing one second half field goal. The Aggies came away with the victory and the fans found themselves flying high which led to a fabulous overnight fiesta.
