The Sickos Synopsis - Our Weekly early 1900s Style Old-Timey Game Recaps - Week 8 Edition

In partnership with

Here at the Sickos Committee, we really love the Old-Timey newspaper headlines from college football games from the 1920s and earlier. We wanted to do a weekly recap of some randomly decided games in this Old-Timey style of writing for the fun of it. Just try to imagine an old-school news reporter reading this aloud to you on an old transistor radio. Also, we go really heavy on the alliteration.

How do we decide which games we do? Well, if you are declared the Sickos Committee Game of the Week, you get one automatically no matter what happens. However, the others are randomly decided by the committee writing staff; it could be the normal headliner game of the week or some random FCS game we got drawn in by and just wanted to write about because we found it compelling. We typically do about three to six games a week.

Here are the Headlines for Week 8

SOUTHERN SLAYS STATE IN MODERN DAY HATE

October 18, 2025 - Statesboro, GA

Georgia State shimmied down to Statesboro to take on their relatively new rival, Georgia Southern. Georgia State’s football program is only fifteen years old, but they’ve hastily assembled a rivalry with their conference mates, with whom they share the same state. Their rival, Georgia Southern, is a proud program with an FCS championship legacy and has played football for over a century. The game pitted two Peach State mates, the pesky Panthers and the eager Eagles, both desperately needing another notch in the win column as they fought to see who was the real GSU. The energetic Eagles engineered an easy stroll down the field, finding three. The Panthers then plotted their course for paydirt and put up a touchdown. Southern slid right back down the surface, and JC French IV flung a football for 20 yards and a touchdown toss. State then found a field goal for a stalemate in Modern Day Hate at 10-10. The Panthers pushed the pill past the pylon for another TD and led 17-13 at halftime. In the second half, the Southern signal caller, also known as the fleet-footed French the Fourth, found a four-yard TD and a 20-17 lead. State was not resigned to their fate and found a touchdown to take a 24-20 lead into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, Southern summoned their strength and scored three straight touchdowns to the tune of twenty-one points, and with their exuberant and exquisite defense, they punished the Panthers, stopping and stymieing State’s squad. The swarm of Southern spectators screamed Southern never State as the final seconds ticked off late and they had won Modern Day Hate.

COUGARS CRUSH, USURP UTES

October 18, 2025 - Provo, UT

One of the defining features of a good rivalry is a major dispute that has been lost to the ages. The University of Utah and Brigham Young University have played for over a century, but the opening game is in dispute. The rivalry, now known as “The Holy War,” continues to roil the Beehive State and beset all the citizens, forcing them to be beside themselves as the battles play through the ages. This season’s edition of the rivalry took a while to get started. Each team had a turnover on downs and a punt before the Cougars got a touchdown. After another turnover on downs from the Utes and a punt by the home team, the Utes finally get on the board to tie the game. The war raged on, but the BYU players got a field goal before the end of the half. The second saw hostilities resume after the truce. More punting and another Utah turnover on downs, the teams trade touchdowns again. From there, disaster strikes the Utah eleven, as they throw an interception and the Cougars make them pay by getting a touchdown. After the two teams again stop one another on their own, the Utah Utes score the final points of the game, but it’s too little, too late. The onside kick at the end goes off the leg of Utah Man, and the ball goes to the home team, who wind the clock down to zero.

DUKES DOMINATE OVERWHELM ODU

October 18, 2025 - Harrisonburg, VA

The Commonwealth of Virginia loves football as much as any state in the Republic. Two teams within the borders have a regal flair to their rivalry’s nickname. The “Royal Rivalry” features Old Dominion University and James Madison University. Both teams have been excellent vehicles for people of Virginia to get a quality education at a reasonable cost. On the football field, the teams first met in 2011 and are now meeting as conference mates. JMU got the day started by taking their first drive over the goal line. The teams traded punts, and then the game ripped off six consecutive drives in a row that all ended in touchdowns. After the exchange, the score sat at 28-27, advantage Dukes. Once the halftime period ended, it was all Dukes, as they scored without any resistance from the visitors, scoring five touchdowns that went unanswered.

SPARKY STUMPS RED RAIDERS

October 18, 2025 - Tempe, AZ

As teams crisscross the Republic to play one another as conferences grow in size and land area, we get matchups with teams that are vying for glory and greatly gather themselves for the games that excite the teams and fans. Texas Tech University has emerged as the class of the Big XII conference in this modern era. Joining the Red Raiders in this contest are the newcomers and defending conference champion Arizona State University Sun Devils. The Sun Devils jumped all over the Red Raiders and scored two quick field goals. The Raiders responded with a touchdown after getting a turnover on downs, taking the lead. To end the half, the Men from Tempe get another field goal to end the half. The second half starts with an Arizona State touchdown and field goal, pushing their lead to a dozen. But the Red Raiders, undeterred, unbroken, and unbowed, claw their way back into the contest and take a lead that they hold onto for 86 seconds, as Sparky’s eleven race down the field and score the final touchdown of the game, securing their lead. The visitors scramble to get the lead back but run out of time as the defense stands strong, ending the Red Raiders undefeated hopes in the desert.

CLEVER CARDINALS CUT CANES

October 17, 2025 - Miami Gardens, FL

The Atlantic Coastal Conference has grown over the past three decades. It now boasts teams from every corner of the Republic. The University of Louisville faced off this week against the University of Miami (FL) in a contest to confirm if the Canes would remain spotless in the loss column. The Cardinals showed no fear and took an immediate 14-point lead in the first quarter. The Hurricanes finally respond with a touchdown of their own. From there, disaster struck the home team like lightning repeatedly. Throughout the game, the Cards caught four interceptions, ending multiple promising drives throughout the evening. With the teams trading field goals, the Cardinals get back over the goal line with another touchdown in the third quarter. With Louisville sputtering and fumbling the ball away, the Canes pull to within three. After a stop on the Cards, the Men from Miami were marching down the field, but an errant throw, the fourth interception of the night, ended the game for the home team, as the Cards ran the clock out and ended the undefeated season for the Hurricanes.

Hotty Toddy Hot Yoga Humbled Between The Hedges

October 18, 2025 - Athens, GA

A Top Ten tussle took place as the Ole Miss Rebels were ready to ransack Sanford Stadium and secure their spot at the top of the SEC standings. Lane Kiffin carved out time to practice self-care and had himself a hot yoga session as a literal pre-game warmup. The brutish Bulldogs barreled down the battlefield before a poorly timed penalty pushed them back fifteen yards and forced Georgia to settle for a 51-yard field goal to take the lead 3-0. The dueling defenses disappeared, and the scoreboard was spinning like a slot machine as the next nine possessions turned into touchdowns, taking the game midway into the 4th quarter with Ole Miss on top 35-33. By then, Georgia’s gritty Bulldogs woke up, wrestled control, and tested the transfer QB, Trinidad Chambliss. A quick three-and-out marked the first missed scoring opportunity for the misfits from Mississippi, while the Georgians gained points with a touchdown and a field goal as they continued to cause havoc to their counterparts. Four incompletions in their final opportunity forced Ole Miss to a turnover on downs, and Georgia knelt out the clock to close the match with a victory.
