Here at the Sickos Committee, we really love the Old-Timey newspaper headlines from college football games from the 1920s and earlier. We wanted to do a weekly recap of some randomly decided games in this Old-Timey style of writing for the fun of it. Just try to imagine an old-school news reporter reading this aloud to you on an old transistor radio. Also, we go really heavy on the alliteration.
How do we decide which games we do? Well, if you are declared the Sickos Committee Game of the Week, you get one automatically no matter what happens. However, the others are randomly decided by the committee writing staff; it could be the normal headliner game of the week or some random FCS game we got drawn in by and just wanted to write about because we found it compelling. We typically do about three to six games a week.

Here are the Headlines for Week Zero

August 29, 2026 - Charlottesville, VA
In 1904 two teams met for the first time. They had different names; Virginia was called the “Blue and Orange,” and NC State was known then as “The Agricultural and Mechanical College of North Carolina,” but the animosity was the same. The game was played with Virginia at a size disadvantage, but the outcome was as solid a performance as one could ask for the Hoos, a shut-out win at home. This season, after much consternation about the location, the University of Virginia lined it up against North Carolina State University. The game began with a single field goal from the Cavaliers, which commenced a complete and catastrophic afternoon for the Wolfpack. Immediately after allowing the first points, the visitors threw an interception, which the Men from Virginia promptly turned into a touchdown. More offensive woes befell the Agriculturals; a short drive led to another change of possession, this time a punt, and the UVA team clad in all orange took the ball all the way for another score. Between four punts, two from each team and a was fumble given away by NC State. The second half showed promise for the Wolfpack, they finally got on the board, but then Virginia answered with an odyssey of a drive. Traversing the field from tip to tip, amassing 75 yards on 23 plays and holding the ball for 12 minutes, ultimately putting the ball back into the endzone. The game showed no remorse for the visitors, as their next possession ended on downs, leading to the final points of the afternoon, a field goal try that put the game away for good.

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played college football for a proud 134 years. The teams, schools, and fanbases are as rabid and fervent in their support as any within the Republic. The tradition of pitting the two premier HBCU conferences of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) continues in this season. This year’s edition of the game features the Howard University Bison and the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs. The teams met in a contrast of styles: the Bison, much to the credit of their name, play a physical, bruising style of football, while Alabama A&M brings speed and finesse. The contrast was met with a clatter and clash that conjured a game of considerable force. The first three scoring attempts of the game came from Howard, as they put up a rapid 13 points and jumped all over the Bulldogs. On a tremendous catch in the back of the endzone that was an elegant dance of footwork, catching, and leaping ability, the Bulldogs got on the board with a touchdown. Before the end of the half, the teams traded touchdowns to take the game into the half with a score of 20-14 with Howard at the advantage. At the half, the bands took the field, and the Marching Maroon and White Marching Band shook the stadium from the nosebleed seats to the sidelines. The Howard University "Showtime" Marching Band then took the field, and everyone was in the stands dancing to the grooves. After the break the Bison got back on the board with another field goal. But the Men from A&M were not to be denied, their offense refused to be detained, and the defense began a domination that lasted for several quarters. Taking the lead on another pair of scores, the Bulldogs took a 10-point run into a lead. But the Bison stampeded back, scoring a touchdown and adding the two-point try for good measure. The final drive of the game was a hurry-up affair that ended with a Bison defender crashing and bashing into a Bulldog receiver, dislodging the ball and recovering it for the Howard eleven. This sealed the victory and returned the victory to Washington, DC’s premier HBCU.

August 29, 2026 - Dublin, Ireland
Many traditions within college football span generations, time, and space. Tending toward the idea that “for those that are outsiders, no explanation will suffice. For those that are initiated, no explanation is needed.” Of these, the start of the college football season has taken place in Èire (Ireland). On the Emerald Isle the game has been well received and reaches back decades. This season the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs met on the field to display a shining example of the great American game of college football. The game began inauspiciously, with the teams trading a pair of field goals. Then the teams traded a pair of touchdowns. This situation of stalemate and strife persisted until a calamity befell the Horned Frogs as an errant snap went over the head of the punter and out of the back of the endzone, giving the Tar Heels a safety! With this, the Carolina Blue-clad teams never relinquished the lead. The Tar Heel defense forced a fumble, which gave excellent field position for another field goal. After that, the game’s drives went as follows: TCU – PUNT, UNC – FUMBLE, TCU – DOWNS, UNC – MISSED FIELD GOAL, TCU – DOWNS, UNC – END OF GAME. With such a display, those watching the game in Ireland and here in the USA were treated to a defensive slugfest. The fighting frogs had one last chance to get the ball back, but the defensive line was feeling froggy and jumped across the line for an infraction that sent the Belichick-led Heels holding their hands up high, holding on for a hard-fought victory, sending Chapel Hill into cheers.
