The Sickos Synopsis - Our Weekly 1920s style Old-Timey Recap for Week 10 - Featuring ULM/Texas State, UMass/UConn, SMU/Houston, Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech and Alabama A&M/Mississippi Valley State

Here at the Sickos Committee, we really love the Old-Timey newspaper headlines from college football games from the 1920s and earlier. We wanted to do a weekly recap of some randomly decided Sickos games in this Old-Timey style of writing for the fun of it. Just try to imagine an old school news reporter reading this aloud to you on an old transistor radio. Here are the headlines for Week 10.

Nov. 5th - Monroe, LA

The Texas State Bobcats moved their wait to Monroe, Louisiana to face Terry Bowden’s boys in Malone Stadium in a Sun Belt West Showdown. The Bobcats burst out of the gates and galloped right down the field for a 7-0 lead. The Warhawks fumbled on their next possession and the Bobcats bounded right back into the end-zone for a 14-0 lead. ULM punted on their next possession and the Texas State punt returner sashayed and sauntered their way to the ULM 4 yard line and took a 21-0 lead after a three yard touchdown run. At the end of the 1st Quarter, the Warhawks were shell shocked but Bowden’s boys wouldn’t bow down. The Warhawks wandered down the field to find the end-zone to cut the lead to 21-7. ULM was united and began to uproot the Bobcats blueprint for their early success. With 33 seconds left in the half, the Warhawks Wide Receiver Tyrone Howell caught a pass, shook off tons of Texas State would-be tacklers and tiptoed down the sideline for a timely touchdown to put the Warhawks within 24-17 at halftime. The Warhawks second-half woes continued when they threw an untimely interception to start the second half. However, the ULM defense denied any further Bobcat penetration, holding them to a field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, another Monroe mishap in the form of a fumble on the kick return allowed Texas State to take over in Warhawk territory. The Warhawk defense blunted the Bobcats attack and broke up a 4th & 1 conversion attempt. ULM then unloaded and unearthed a timely 12 play 73 yard touchdown to tighten the Bobcat lead to 27-24. The Bobcats bounced back and bruised their way to a field goal to extend their lead to 30-24. ULM unfurled and unleashed an offensive attack to find their way to a touchdown and extra point to lead 31-30 with 10 minutes to go. The Bobcats and Warhawks traded drives with both teams getting nowhere. The Warhawks had the ball with 1:39 left and tried to kill the clock but on 3rd down the Warhawks QB fumbled the ball and it bounced into the Bobcats hands at the ULM 39 yard line. Texas State took the drive timidly to try to set up a game winning field goal and tiptoed 18 yards in six plays to set up a 38 yard game winning field goal attempt. The Texas State kicker was 3 for 3 on the day but saw his final fateful kick sail slightly wide right and the Warhawks walked away winners!

ULM 31 - Texas State 30.

Nov. 4th - East Hartford, CT

The Massachusetts Minutemen made their way down to East Hartford to face their rivals in the UConn Huskies. The Minutemen mustered up the strength to defeat the Huskies last year for their only win of the season. However, this year the Huskies Head Coach had them hoping for higher aspirations and dreaming of blissful bowl games as they sat at 4-5 before the game began. The Minutemen marched down the field for an opening field goal and flustered the Husky faithful. The hard-nosed Huskies hurriedly had an answer in the form of a 75 yard touchdown run. UConn unfurled another drive finding a field goal for a 10-3 lead. UMass unearthed an unprecedented passing attack. They were previously averaging 78 yards passing per game but the Minutemen muscled a mighty 53 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 10-10. UConn undertook a last minute drive to give the Huskies a 13-10 halftime advantage. After halftime, the Huskies defensive line known as the War Daddies, denied and deterred UMass at every point. UConn unleashed and unloaded a rushing attack from Victor Rosa to the tune of two timely touchdowns to take a 27-10 lead. UMass unraveled and unbalanced couldn’t uncover a way back into the game. The legions at Rentschler Field celebrated Connecticut's fifth win of the season and a dream of an improbable bowl bound season was still alive at 5-5.

UConn 27 - UMass - 10

Nov. 5th - Dallas, TX.

The Houston Cougars traveled up Interstate 45 to face their conference foes the SMU Mustangs. The SMU busted out the black out uniforms and unleashed an unprecedented offensive attack determined to defeat the courageous Cougars. The Mustangs mounted a masterful march after march down the field in the first half. SMU scored touchdown after touchdown, tiring out the SMU Pony named Peruna to the tune of eight straight touchdowns and 56 points in the first half. The Cougars came to battle but found themselves down by three touchdowns 56-35 at halftime much to their Head Coach Dana Holgersen’s dismay. After halftime, the Cougars continued to claw and climb back into the game but couldn’t muster muscle to move the Mustangs away from their end zone. The Mustangs and Cougars continued to trade touchdown after touchdown in the second half, setting a NCAA record for most combined points in a regulation game with 140 points. The SMU QB Tanner Mordecai finished the game with naughty and nice nine touchdown passes. The Cougars signal caller Clayton Tune tossed seven scintillating and sexy touchdown passes but had three ill-timed interceptions which proved to be the difference in the game.

SMU 77 - Houston 63

Nov. 5th - Blacksburg, VA

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets journeyed to Blacksburg, Virginia to face the Virginia Tech Hokies in what the kids call the Tech-Mo Bowl. The Georgia Tech Head Coach Brent Key hoped to find the key to victory against the Hokies and the Virginia Tech Head Coach Brent Pry hoped to pry the victory from the Jackets. The Jackets jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and looked to be in control of the clash. The hard-nosed Hokies had other ideas as they scored three straight touchdowns to open the 2nd Quarter. The Hokies third touchdown was a nifty and nimble 90 yard punt return leaving the Georgia Tech defenders desperately grasping air and Lane Stadium felt the spirit of Beamer Ball had returned to the Hokies. The jagged Jackets found two timely field goals to tighten the tussle to 20-16. The Virginia Tech defense denied and dogged the Jackets QB all game long and forced him into throwing a pick-six giving the Hokies a decisive and dominating 27-16 lead at the end of the 3rd Quarter. Coach Key kept the Jackets joined after the disjointed disappointing play. The Yellow Jackets jostled and jockeyed their way in the game and jolted the Hokies defense with a 56 yard touchdown pass to cut the Hokies lead to 27-22. An ill-timed interception tossed by the Hokies QB kept the Jackets in the contest. The Jackets then juggled and journeyed to the end-zone to juxtapose the scoreboard with a 28-27 Georgia Tech lead with 3:30 left in the game. The Hokies had one last chance but they failed and fumbled away their fortunes on the final possession.

Nov. 3rd - Itta Bena, MS

The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils have had several close calls with victory this season. However, coming into today’s contest their record was standing at 0-8. On an 8-game losing streak the denizens of the Delta were seeking some much-needed winning mojo to finish their season. That was going to be an uphill battle as the Alabama A&M Bulldogs came into town seeking to improve their record within conference play.
