The college football season has one game remaining, so I figured it was the best time to go through all the stats for the year and attempt to gather some of the stats that don’t get a lot of attention but for the entire year across all of Division I football. I did this on a weekly basis all year, why not do it again for the year end?

We will start with the safeties as we always do.

SAFETY LEADERS FOR THE YEAR IN FBS

In FBS, we had nine schools tie for the lead in Safeties Forced.

Georgia State had back to back games with Safeties early in the year. You know Iowa would wind up here every year like normal. Oklahoma forced a safety to seal a win over Auburn.

All of these schools couldn’t hold a candle to William and Mary though. They had THREE Safeties in SINGLE a Game all on blocked punts.

I had a fascination with the longest drives for Time of Possession. I am fascinated when teams hold the ball for a long time and then watch what they do with it. Did they cap off the hard-working drive with a touchdown or field goal? Or did something go wrong and they had to punt, or maybe they fumbled or threw an interception or turned it over on downs? I broke down some of these with graphics and will provide you with a Top 10.

LONGEST DRIVE OF THE YEAR ENDING IN A PUNT - TIME OF POSSESSION

I have to give it up for Mercyhurst here. They were in Bozeman taking on the eventual champions. This drive was a clock and momentum killer for Montana State. The Lakers wound up losing 17-0 after this drive but it was a legendary one.

They got to first and goal and then went:

• -4 yard run

• 5 yard penalty

• Incomplete

• 15 yard penalty

• Sack

• Punt

LONGEST PUNT OF THE YEAR IN THE NCAA ACROSS ALL DIVISIONS I FOUND SO FAR THIS YEAR.

Josh Castro of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, aka WPI, had a 94-yard punt this year. I found this really by accident. I was just clicking on the top punters in Division III, and Josh was the 2nd place in average, and he wound up winning the DIII First Team All-American Punter. It was a happy accident I found this, and of course I got video. Enjoy.

I am still working on some other stats at the moment, trying to finalize my search for the longest punts in all the NCAA, and will likely do another edition of this before I start working on some fun offseason things.
