The Sickos Stats Summary for Week 10!

In partnership with

Welcome back to the Sickos Stats Summary!

If you missed this last year and the explainer, this year at the Sickos Sentinel, we’re going to bring you something called the Sickos Stats Summary. It’s basically going to be weird stats on different things we found that we don’t think get a lot of attention. We will make some graphics every week and try to give you a few amounts of stats that are unconventionally appealing or things that don’t get highlighted much.

Do I know how many stats will be in each weekly post? Nope.

Also, if I miss something on these, feel free to yell at me to correct. I am nowhere near perfect and data pulls miss things sometimes 🙂

The Sickos Stats Summary

WEEK 10 SAFETY ALERTS FOR GAMES INVOLVING DIVISION I TEAMS

In 2024, we started tracking records of people who scored a safety on their opponent. Last year teams who scored a safety were 58-29 on the year. A winning percentage of .666%. So, we wanted to track them again. Teams scoring a safety are Overall, 43-21 for the season when scoring a safety.

This week no punt was safe as we had a Punt Block bonanza of safeties. 5 SAFETIES RESULTED BY PUNT BLOCKS!

  • William and Mary blocked THREE PUNTS for THREE SAFETIES. (not an NCAA record, we checked)

  • South Dakota blocked a punt for a safety.

  • Virginia Tech blocked a punt for a safety.

  • Wofford got a sack for a safety.

  • South Carolina State got a sack for a safety.

Everyone won this weekend, except for Virginia Tech. So 4-1 on the week and 47-22 for the season overall.

RARE PENALTY CALL OF THE WEEK

We have a new submission in the summary from our Committee Member Misnomer.

While illegal formation is one of the most common fouls in football, this specific violation required referee Jason Autrey and his SEC crew to break out some very exacting language in Saturday's primetime matchup between Oklahoma and Tennessee.

"Number 14 [Braylon Staley] did not have his shoulders parallel to the line of scrimmage, therefore he is not a lineman,” Autrey announced to the sold out Neyland crowd. With Tennessee in the hurry-up, Staley, who was lined up on the line, turned to get an updated playcall from the sideline.

However, the snap came before he could reset his body to face the goal line, drawing a flag from Head Line-Judge, Ryan Hagan. This seemingly minor instance violates a key part of what the rules book says makes a lineman a lineman. Rule 2-27-4-a-2 states that “A Team A (rules book speak for the offense) player is legally on the scrimmage line when facing their opponent’s goal line with the line of their shoulders approximately parallel thereto…”

As the ball is snapped, the inside receiver’s shoulders were not turned forward which drew the flag.

Staley was able to atone for the “grievous sin of standing on a slight angle” just a few plays later when he caught a five yard touchdown pass to give Tennessee an early lead. Remember folks, the rules of football are anything if not needless exacting and, oftentimes, very silly.

I would have posted the video but ESPN claimed copyright and they didn’t want you to see this horrific penalty.

LONGEST PUNT OF THE WEEK FOR DIVISION I -WEEK 10

I'm going to open here, stating there is a caveat for this award this week. There was a punt by Miami that technically went 73 yards for a touchback. However, on the play, the Miami player touched the ball around the 9-yard line and then mistakenly kicked it towards the goal line. Then the long snapper tried in vain to save it and pushed it back towards the field, in which he knocked it off his feet and into the end zone for a touchback and a technically scored 73-yarder. We debated this one for a bit and didn’t feel this was an award-worthy or trophy-worthy punt distance and/or play. Also, if the punt was downed in the field of play, it would have been marked at the point of the ball being touched by the Miami player at the 9-yard line instead of the 1-yard line. Then there should have been a declined penalty since SMU would decline the illegal touching penalty, which could have resulted in a re-kick or a touchback. That punt was really not technically a 73-yard punt even though it was scored that way.

We have placed this punt on our YouTube, and you can judge our decision to not award it.

On top of this, the trophy is supposed to go to a punter who would want to celebrate the punt result and we don’t feel they would want this trophy so as a Committee we decided to award it to a punter who had a 72 yard punt.

So after committee deliberations, we noticed second place was North Alabama punter Adam Watford, who had a 74-yard punt earlier this year and didn’t win that week, and he missed by a YARD. We felt this warranted the LONGEST PUNT OF THE WEEK for Division I, since it was technically unfair for him to miss by a YARD AGAIN.

Adam’s Award

Here is Adam’s boot that flew through the Utah elevation, and the camera couldn’t keep up, resulting in a touchback. Congrats, we shall send your trophy soon!

We may institute an award where the winner cannot have a touchback next year, but for now, enjoy it, Adam! You likely should have had two trophies, but enjoy this one!
