The Sickos Stats Summary 2024

The Sickos Stats Summary for this year was a highlight of weird stats on different things we found that we don’t think get a lot of attention. We made some graphics and gave out some fun weekly awards for Longest Punt, Longest Scoring and Non-Scoring Drive of the week, among all the Safety Alerts. I got really curious after bowl season and wanted to do a year-long recap of the Top 10 Longest Scoring and Non-Scoring Drives of the Year. I’m going to list out the Top 10 of each category because I found it interesting. Also, if one of the remaining College Football Playoff games gets into the Top 10, I’ll add it later.

TOP 10 LONGEST SCORING DRIVES - TIME OF POSSESSION - 2024 SEASON

You may think that this will be a category dominated by Army, and you’re right. Army had one of the most dominant time of possession offenses of 2024. A phenomenal year for the Black Knights. They had 12 wins and basically dominated the Top 10 Longest Scoring Drives of the Year with four entries. Some other schools may surprise you with their inclusion, and keep in mind this is for all of Division I (FBS & FCS).

  1. Army vs North Texas - 21 Plays, 94 Yards, Time of Possession: 13 Minutes & 54 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  2. North Dakota vs Iowa State - 23 Plays, 88 Yards, Time of Possession: 12 Minutes & 24 Seconds, resulting in a field goal.

  3. Army vs Louisiana Tech - 21 Plays, 75 Yards, Time of Possession: 12 Minutes & 21 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  4. Tulane vs Charlotte - 20 Plays, 80 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 58 Seconds, resulting in a field goal.

  5. North Dakota State vs South Dakota - 20 Plays, 99 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 53 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  6. Army vs Rice - 17 Plays, 90 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 52 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  7. Air Force vs Fresno State - 19 Plays, 75 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 50 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  8. SMU vs Houston Christian - 16 Plays, 69 Yards (nice), Time of Possession 10 Minutes & 50 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  9. Georgia Tech vs Miami - 17 Plays, 75 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 45 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

  10. Army vs Tulane - 16 Plays, 84 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 44 Seconds, resulting in a touchdown.

TOP 10 LONGEST NON-SCORING DRIVES - TIME OF POSSESSION - 2024 SEASON

This category is really up for grabs, and not one team really dominated this list, like Army, did for the longest scoring drive. These drives had an interesting combination of “screw you, I am ending this game, you’re not getting the ball back”, “OH NO DISASTER, WHAT A BAD IDEA”, “this is what you get for settling for a field goal” or even improbably a punt. I found this Top 10 list one of intrigue, or yeah, that is what you get. Keep in mind, this is for all of Division I (FBS & FCS).

  1. Elon vs Albany - 17 Plays, 73 Yards, Time of Possession: 12 Minutes, 29 Seconds, END OF GAME.

  2. Northern Illinois vs Fresno State - 20 Plays, 85 Yards, Time of Possession: 11 Minutes and 53 Seconds, Turnover on Downs.

  3. Eastern Kentucky vs Western Kentucky - 17 Plays, 89 Yards, Time of Possession: 11 Minutes & 46 Seconds, missed 17 yard field goal. (yes, they were on the 1 yard line)

  4. Tulane vs South Florida - 17 Plays, 55 Yards, Time of Possession: 11 Minutes & 29 Seconds, END OF GAME.

  5. Army vs North Texas - 14 Plays, 46 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 50 Seconds, Punt.

  6. Ball State vs Northern Illinois - 16 Plays, 60 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes & 5 Seconds, Punt.

  7. Buffalo vs Liberty - 17 Plays, 68 Yards, Time of Possession: 10 Minutes even, missed 30 yard field goal. (This drive was basically the reason I created the substack post because I got this idea while watching the Bahamas Bowl)

  8. North Alabama vs Memphis - 19 Plays, 44 Yards, Time of Possession: 9 Minutes & 57 Seconds, Turnover on Downs.

  9. LIU vs Rhode Island - 17 Plays, 73 Yards, Time of Possession: 9 Minutes & 56 Seconds, Turnover on Downs.

  10. Richmond vs Delaware - 15 Plays, 61 Yards, Time of Possession: 9 Minutes & 52 Seconds, Turnover on Downs.

Yes, I ran data for 37,574 total drives for the 2024 Division I season. Would you expect anything less from the Sickos Committee? Also, I can pretty much guarantee a typo somewhere in here as I always miss one and something won’t fully be correct as around 400 drives had some sort of data error on them. That’s only a 0.11% error rate, which means it’s 99.89% correct. Good enough for the committee.
