The Sickos Committee Weekly Food Fusions - Week 3 Edition - UMass at Iowa

Here at the Sickos Committee, we’re big fans of weird ballpark and stadium food combinations. We love the gigantic portions or weird combinations of food and even things that seem really humanly impossible to eat while seated for a game. So in that spirit, our resident weird food connoisseur, the Corn Correspondent (Corn-espondent, as so many of you wish we called it, but damn it is too difficult to say out loud), Andy, will be doing a weekly food blog where he combines ingredients from two different teams randomly selected each week and gives you the recipe here each Friday during the season. Here is the Week Three Edition.

I’ve seen your comments, and I’ve read your emails (I haven’t read any emails or comments). Please don’t send mean ones, I’ll cry. You said that the cheese curds sound good and the Cheerwine margarita was a treat, but you have small children! They don’t like spicy food and you’re a responsible parent who doesn’t want to give them alcohol. So this one is for everybody to enjoy! Plus, the fall temperatures and cooler weather are going to eventually lead to trips to the apple orchard for many of you. The University of Massachusetts is traveling out to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Both teams are looking for a chance to get right after a loss, and I want to give you a snack if you choose to watch. I present to you the following….

Snickers Salad Fluffernutter

I’ve spent most of my life in the Midwest, and if there’s one thing to know about us (aside from our love of corn) is our loose definition of “salad”. While I couldn’t track any definitive proof that it was invented in Iowa, the snickers salad is a staple of Midwestern potlucks. A mixture of cool whip, vanilla pudding, apples, and snickers makes for a lovely dessert. When I was thinking about what I could do with this, I thought about the Fluffernutter which was invented in Massachusetts. If you’ve never had a Fluffernutter before, it’s basically a PB&J with marshmallow cream instead of jelly. I introduced my roommate to these in college and he loved them!

I assembled all the ingredients. I thought about classing it up and making my own bread, but then I remembered that if you’re making this for your kids they’re probably going to want some basic white sandwich bread. Something like the classic Wonder brand that you likely grew up with. Mom on Timeout gave me the recipe for Snickers salad. I’ll admit it doesn’t look very appealing after you mix everything together. It’s basically vanilla pudding with stuff mixed in. If you do like Trish recommended and save an apple and Snickers bar for garnish, it will look a lot better!

Assembling the Fluffernutter is pretty straight forward. Peanut butter on one side, marshmallow on the other side. Put the Snickers salad in the middle, combine the slices of bread and enjoy. It’s a great, quick meal to throw together if you’re pressed for time! And it’s got something for everybody to enjoy! Peanut butter, candy, apples, and marshmallows…..what’s not to like?
