The Sickos Committee 2024 Preseason Poll Explainer!!

Hello, fellow Sickos Committee members! You likely followed this Twitter account over the off-season and didn’t know what you fully stumbled into. Well, we welcome you to the Sickos Committee, and now it’s time to vote for the 2024 Sickos Preseason Poll! For veterans of the poll, welcome back, and it is time to vote again!

For many of you, this may be your first time being tasked with voting in a Sickos Committee poll, and you might not know what to do. Well, Sickos Committee Commissioner Escalante aka the Commish has made this poll explainer just for you!

A link to a Google form will be posted on Twitter, Bluesky, Instagram and in this post here. You will be able to select your projected Top 10 Sickos Teams for the 2024 College Football season.

(We require a Google sign-in to try to limit everyone to one ballot per person, and we do NOT collect email addresses.)

Well, that’s completely up to you! Keep in mind that these are the teams YOU want to watch during the season based on whatever you deem “unconventionally appealing”.

Here are some questions to ask to try to get you into a “Sickos” voting mindset.

Is it a team that may have a coach on the hot seat to start the year? A team that hired a new head coach who you don’t think will work out? A team that hired some “interesting” new coordinators in an attempt to save the head coach’s job? Maybe a team that you think is ranked too high in the AP or Coach’s poll, and you think they will flame out? How about a team that loves to transfer-portal a large chunk of their roster? A team who is trying to replace their incredible punter who went to the NFL? A Power 5 team that may lose to a G5 team or FCS team in the first few weeks of the season? A school who just got a new Athletic Director, and you’re not too sure how stable the returning head coach's job is? A team that had a really rough year last year but, for some reason, kept their head coach? A team who appeared to be making a breakthrough last year, but they fired their head coach? How about a team who has to travel cross country a ton due to the crazy conference realignment?   

Now, Sickos can mean many things, and being a Sickos team isn’t always a bad thing. Here are some possible examples of being a “good” Sickos team.

Is it a team that you think will be unexpectedly good and cause some chaos? Is it a plucky G5 team that played spoiler last year, and you think they could do it again? Is it a team that hasn’t been ranked in an incredibly long time, but you think they will finally get ranked this year? Is it a team that played in the most one possession games last year, and you think they will do it again? Maybe a team that you think will flirt with bowl eligibility? It could be a team that upset many teams unexpectedly but couldn’t win normal games last year? Maybe a team who made a bowl game unexpectedly, and you’re really curious if they can do it again this year? A team that you think would be happy with 6-6 and a bowl game? A team that hired a new head coach, and you hope they can turn around a historically bad FBS team in a northeasterly region of a southern state that some people like to mention? A team that got a new QB in the transfer portal, and you can’t wait to see how it goes?

Or maybe you have random reasons for voting for Sickos teams.

Is it a team that did the weirdest off-season photo shoot? What about a coach who said something strange at a Media days? Maybe it’s a team that got in trouble with the NCAA? Maybe a team that has got a weird hashtag about embracing something? Or something about Darts Only? Maybe you think they have an incredibly weird stadium or dome? Maybe it’s a team with an incredibly weird schedule? Maybe it’s a team that got their coach to get Duke’s Mayo dumped on him? Maybe it’s a team that got to eat a gigantic Pop-Tart? Maybe it’s a team that plays a lot on the CW? Maybe it’s a team that will travel the most miles in this insane conference realignment? Maybe it’s a team that hired a fired OC to become an offensive analyst on their staff?

You ultimately get to decide who are your Top 10 Sickos teams are based on whatever criteria you use. Since “Sickos” is incredibly undefinable, the choice is up to you and who you feel has earned your vote.

(If you feel like some team or person is really Sickos in another sport like Formula 1, NASCAR, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, etc., you can submit those choices in your ballot also, and we will track those categories in others receiving votes.)

Also, we ask you to not be derogatory, please, as we will remove those items from the poll, and they will NOT be listed.

We’re Sickos because we watch all the games, and we’re not Sickos who make fun of real-life situations, which are sensitive in nature.

Basically, don’t be a jerk with your votes, this is supposed to be all fun and mainly vibes based.

Also, we know it’s election season, so any votes for politicians or politics-based votes WILL BE THROWN OUT, or maybe we will give them to ULM. So, be nice to our Masterspreadsheeter Kevin, who tallies all these votes up.

Again, we call ourselves Sickos because we try to watch all the games, no matter what the records are, because we support all the teams. We try to keep this poll for on-the-field reasons or in-the-stands reasons only.

Wherever you place them in the poll, that team would get a corresponding amount of votes:

  • 1st place = 10 pts.

  • 2nd place = 9 pts.

  • 3rd place = 8 pts.

  • 4th place = 7 pts.

  • 5th place = 6 pts.

  • 6th place = 5 pts.

  • 7th place = 4 pts.

  • 8th place = 3 pts.

  • 9th place = 2 pts.

  • 10th place = 1 pt.  

We will close the poll on Friday August 16th at 9 pm CT and tabulate the votes.

We will release the Sickos 2024 Preseason Top 25 Poll on Monday August 19th.

At the end of the season and we crown a Sickos National Champion, then we will do a food drive for the winning city of the Sickos Champion. Last year we raised around $20,000.00 for a local Iowa City food bank. We will do it again and we will likely give away some exclusive swag for a certain dollar donation.
