When I was writing the Best Season of All Time for Schools Who Stopped Having A Football Team aka the BSOATFSWSHAFT - Part 18 of ??? - The Northeastern Huskies. I noted I could not find anything on the final game of that season for Northeastern.
Well, I reached out to the East Carolina library via email to see if they had anything from the game. It’s always fun trying to email libraries or athletic departments for things.
“Hey, it's the Commish from the Sickos Committee, and I was wondering if you had this random and really specific thing associated with college football. Don’t mind the name at all, I promise you we are real.”
Much to my surprise, the East Carolina library had a program of the 1963 Eastern Bowl, and they scanned it into their database about a week after my original email. Special shout out to Alston at the East Carolina library for responding to my random email, then uploading this and allowing me to share this with all of you.
The 1963 Eastern Bowl

Why so glum, kiddo and hound dog? It’s Northeastern vs. East Carolina! I noticed on the program they had an undercard and played a game before the bowl game. The Lehigh Valley 115 lb. All Stars vs. the “Little Quakers” from Philadelphia, PA.

Looks like each team got to stay in the Americus Hotel in faboulous Allentown, Pennslyvania. I wonder what that smorgasbord looked like in 1963. Also, the hotel is still thriving and is now apart of Wyndham. (present day below)

Let’s check out the Stadium concessions for the 1963 Eastern Bowl game fans.

We know from the earlier post, the game temperatures finshed at 28 degrees. I bet that .20 cent Hot Chocolate was a big seller for all who attended.

Two unfamiliar and strange squads are coming to Allentown! Also, promoters were banking on 10,000 in attendance for this game. They were hoping to be named a Small College eastern regional playoff destination. Also, this was a charity fundraiser for cystic fibrosis.

They hoped the weatherman would cooperate too but as we know, they only drew 2,800 in frigid 28 degree temperatures.

They packed up shop after this one. Also, the former Cement Bowl turned Eastern Bowl was not named that due to NorthEASTERN and EAST Carolina like I had hoped. Ah well.

Evidently this was a common pose for Joe Zabilski. We’ve found two pictures like this of him holding a football. Also, we got a team photo!

Hey we got some stats for Northeastern’s Best Season of All Time.

Just incredible both top QB’s for Northeastern have stats that could be easily eclipsed in a single game nowawdays.

24 for 59 for 378 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs could totally happen in a game. It’d likely be a game, and the Committee would be all over it too! Also, really dismal punting numbers, Huskies. Only 25 punts for the entire year??? I am disappointed.

The East Carolina squad went with the all standing team picture. Oddly they didn’t list any of their players names in order here.

The East Carolina stats. Their passing would have had to been a Wazzu Pac-12 after dark special to happen in a single game.

51 total punts for the year East Carolina?? That’s more like it.
Oh they also had the undercard teams in the program too!

And finally they added the Ref signals on the bottom of the team pages.

Thank y’all for reading and thank you again to East Carolina’s Joyner library!
