Look, I know we all just watched what occurred on Monday Night. There’s no escaping it, really. There are memes being used all over the place about it. I understand what it is like watching your rivals do something that is improbable, and nothing really makes you feel better about the situation. Keep this from your rival fans, and don’t let them read this, or I don’t think they will since they’re too busy at the moment.

Let me give it a shot, though. Story time.

I grew up as a New Orleans Saints fan; I lived through a head coach saying Diddly Poo, and everything sucked. Hell, if you are a Colts fan, you likely know Jim Mora Sr. and his famous PLAYOFFS?? Rant.

In 1997, I watched the one-year-removed expansion team Carolina Panthers go to the NFC Championship in their second year of existence before the Saints won a damn playoff game. To make matters worse, the hated Atlanta Falcons went to the Super Bowl the very next year while doing the dirty bird dance in 1998. The Saints coach at the time was Mike Ditka, and we had two different Billy Joes (Billy Joe Tolliver and Billy Joe Hobert) rotating in at quarterbacks. It was not a great time as a Saints fan. Guess what, the other lowly team in the division made it to the Super Bowl and won that year. The St. Louis Rams became the “Greatest Show on Turf” with the improbable discovery of Kurt Warner after their starting quarterback, Trent Green, went down with a season-ending injury in preseason.

My luck as a Saints fan was just brutal, I watched in three successive years my NFC West (at the time) coupled with the worst time to be in that division. All my rivals were taking turns dunking in my face. I never thought things were going to get better. At an all time low as a Saints fan. Which could possibly where you are right now Purdue fans.

The Saints in 2000 welcomed in a new head coach, Jim Haslett, offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy, and defensive coordinator Ron Zook. Amazingly, the Saints won the NFC West in 2000 and defeated the St. Louis Rams in the Wildcard Round for their first playoff win when Brian Milne recovered the Az Hakim fumble on the punt return. From that moment on, the Saints finally got rid of the moniker of a team that had never won a playoff game.

The Saints continued to battle and nearly relocated after Hurricane Katrina. Then they struck gold with a coach and legendary quarterback named Drew Brees, and I got to witness them win a Super Bowl in 2010. Something I never thought would ever happen in my lifetime.

Hey Purdue fans, you remember Drew Brees?

Joe Tiller and Drew Brees

Of course you do. Drew is likely going to the NFL Hall of Fame maybe this year or in a few years. Purdue, you’ve got two other quarterbacks in the NFL Hall of Fame already too.

Len Dawson, Super Bowl winner with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Len Dawson during his time Purdue

Then you’ve got Bob Griese, who was on the only undefeated team in NFL History, the 17-0 Miami Dolphins. That’s Purdue excellence there.

Hope this cheered you up a little, Purdue fans. But I know there is still one big problem we must address. Your hated rival just won a national championship, and now they have more than you. Well, I have a creative solution to solve that problem and help you regain that edge over your hated rival. Sure, it’s incredibly petty, and maybe no one else will go along with it, but here at the Committee, we look for creative solutions to difficult problems.

Go with me here.

In August of 2025, before last season started, Auburn claimed four additional football national titles and decided that it would call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. Auburn really only boasted about their national championships in 1957 and 2010. The Tigers also claimed the 1913, 1983, and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. That’s right, Terry Bowden is a national championship-winning coach. (ULM indirectly mentioned)

Auburn’s Athletic Director John Cohen decided to add titles from 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004 to the program’s resume. The AP noted it was “laudable by some and laughable by others.” Don’t be scared off by this Purdue. After all you can just have Purdue Pete stare at someone.

Now, I am not here to debate the national championships that Auburn claimed, as the committee's position is always CLAIM IT. This sport’s history is crazy, and just go ahead and claim a championship if you have a legit shout at one.

First, let me tell you about Parke H. Davis a little bit.

Parke was an American football player, coach, and historian. Shortly before his death, he compiled a list of "National Champion Foot Ball Teams" for the 1934 edition of Spalding's Foot Ball Guide.

Football Guide

Since Parke did this before his death, the NCAA recognizes him as a "major selector" of college football national championships in their official football records book. Davis' selections are the only ones noted by the NCAA to be based on historical research. Here is a link to the football guide.

In 1931, Purdue was named a National Champion by Parke H. Davis alongside Pitt and USC. Pitt finished 8-1 with a loss to Notre Dame. USC finished 10-1 with a loss to 8-2 St. Mary’s to open the season, but they had their Rose Bowl win over 11-0 Tulane. The 1932 Rose Bowl, promoted as a national championship game between the best teams of East and West, matched USC and Tulane, No. 1 and No. 2 in the Dickinson ratings. USC won, 21–12, and was awarded the Albert Russel Erskine Trophy.

Purdue finished 8-1; their only loss was to 5-4-1 Wisconsin, where they went down 21-0 after the 1st quarter due to a fumble and blocked punt. Every team that won a national championship this year had a loss. No one was undefeated. Purdue won a share of the 1931 Big Ten Championship with Michigan, as neither of them played each other that season. Purdue defeated #4 Northwestern to end the season 7-0 in Soldier Field.

Parke Davis named Pitt and Purdue National Champions two years after this game. Pitt claims this National Championship but Purdue doesn’t! Come on, Purdue, claim it!

NOW YOU’RE TIED IN TITLES WITH YOUR RIVAL, BUT WE’RE NOT DONE YET BOILERMAKERS

Stay with me here, this one will get tricky.

In 1943, Purdue’s team finished 9-0, the only undefeated team playing a full schedule in major college football, but finished fifth in the AP Poll. Purdue was ranked #2 on November 8th, at 8-0.

1943 AP Poll

Then they dropped to #5 without losing a game! After Week 6, they had a bye and dropped to 3rd, and Iowa Pre-Flight hopped them into 2nd after the Seahawks beat 2-6-2 Camp Grant 28-13??? What the hell, AP Voters???

The next week, Purdue beat Indiana 7-0, and the Hoosiers finished 4-4-2, but the AP voters dropped Purdue again???? This time to 4th. Michigan hopped them into 3rd after beating 3-6 Ohio State 45-7.

Now, sure, Purdue was still undefeated, and their season was over at 9-0. They had outscored their opponents by a total of 214 to 55 in the season.

Notre Dame was 9-0 and still had one more game to play. Notre Dame lost the game to then-unranked Great Lakes Navy 23-13.

In the final poll, Navy beat Army and vaulted idle Purdue to take the 4th spot.

Great Lakes Navy was UNRANKED and BUMPED ALL THE WAY UP TO 6TH AFTER BEATING NOTRE DAME.

So you have that right, Notre Dame was named the National Champion at 9-1, losing to an UNRANKED Great Lakes Navy in the last game of the year 19-14. They still held their spot at #1 AFTER A LOSS. If you think the AP Poll is frustrating now…  Sheesh.

The really crazy thing here is 1943 Purdue was the ONLY UNDEFEATED TEAM. And guess who beat Great Lakes Navy? That's right, PURDUE. They beat them at the beginning of the season 23-13. So Purdue was the only undefeated team and beat the team who gave the "national champions" their only loss. They now put that team in 6th after Great Lakes Navy beat National Champions. The AP Poll still had the audacity to bump Purdue down a spot to 5th, just one slot above Great Lakes Navy.

Purdue, I am really upset about 1943. I don’t care about schedule strength at all here. They are the only undefeated team, and they beat the team that beat the so-called National Champions.

So you know what you need to do Purdue. CLAIM THE 1943 TITLE. DO IT NOW!! RIGHT THE WRONG FROM 1943!!

And now you have two national championships compared to your rival’s measly one. 😉
