The Sickos Synopsis - Our Weekly early 1900s Style Old-Timey Game Recaps - Week 14 Edition

In partnership with

Here at the Sickos Committee, we really love the Old-Timey newspaper headlines from college football games from the 1920s and earlier. We wanted to do a weekly recap of some randomly decided games in this Old-Timey style of writing for the fun of it. Just try to imagine an old-school news reporter reading this aloud to you on an old transistor radio. Also, we go really heavy on the alliteration.

How do we decide which games we do? Well, if you are declared the Sickos Committee Game of the Week, you get one automatically no matter what happens. However, the others are randomly decided by the committee writing staff; it could be the normal headliner game of the week or some random FCS game we got drawn in by and just wanted to write about because we found it compelling. We typically do about three to six games a week.

Here are the Headlines for Week 14

RED WOLVES WIN BY A WHISKER AS APP STATE’S FINAL KICK CAREENS WIDE

November 29th, 2025 - Boone, NC

The Arkansas State Red Wolves, led by the bristling and buzzing Butch Jones, jaunted over to Boone for a Sun Belt showdown against the mighty Mountaineers. Both squads squared off in what the kids were calling a Bowl Eligi-bowl. The rare win and in for bowl season for both teams who were carrying 5-6 records. App ascended to the early advantage, finding a field goal, but Arkansas State answered with one of their own. App added another and then got a fortuitous fumble and took a ten-point lead at the beginning of the second quarter before all hell broke loose. The Red Wolves fumbled again but blocked the App field goal attempt. The Red Wolves finally put together an offensive excursion to the end zone but then failed on the extra point. On the ensuing kickoff, the Mountaineers muffed the moleskin, and the Red Wolves pounced on the pineapple. Arkansas State slid into the end zone for a 16-13 advantage. App State then answered with a 45-yard field goal to have the scoreboard show two 16s at the halftime whistle. Coming out of the half, the Red Wolves missed a 52-yarder, and then App took the advantage back with a timely touchdown for a 23-16 lead. The App ascendancy was short lived and the rambunctious Red Wolves ran down the field for a touchdown to tangle the two at 23! App added another field goal after an Arkansas State interception, then added a fifth field goal for a 29-23 lead with 1:34 remaining in the game. The Red Wolves rattled off a seven-play scintillating drive for seven and a slim one-point lead with 42 ticks on the Kidd-Brewer Stadium clock. The Mountaineers had to face the Red Wolves defense while also battling the chronometer. The Mountaineers managed to move the moleskin into Red Wolves territory down to the 27-yard line. App State set up for a field goal with four seconds left, needing a forty-five yarder to save their season and send them to a bowl game. They sent out their kicker, who’d have to make his sixth field goal on the day to send the Mountaineer masses into merriment. The kicker struck the sphere and sent it soaring into the air, speeding towards the upward uprights. The sphere slid ever so slightly rightly and missed the mark. The Red Wolves roared as their fortunes found them bowl-bound!

VIRGINIA VANQUISHED VAUNTED VILLAINS OF VPI

November 29th, 2025 - Charlottesville, VA

The Commonwealth of Virginia boasts some of the best schools in the Republic. Spanning the state from all regions, they have provided for one of the most educated populations among the 50 states. The schools at the top of this mountain in football are the University of Virginia’s Cavaliers and the Hokies of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The teams have battled each other since 1895, in which the teams were called “plucky,” but ultimately the game was dominated by the Virginia Varsity, giving the Blue and Orange a win to start the series. This year’s edition of the game returns to the campus of the University of Virginia, a place where “Learning Never Ends,” if they are to be believed. The game was well played, wondrous, and whimsical as the teams began with an interception thrown by the Hokies. This led immediately to UVA scoring a touchdown. This lead would never be challenged by the visitors. The game would be a long series of disasters for VPI: a missed field goal in the first quarter preceded punting, explosive plays allowed by the Lunch Pale defense of VA Tech, and a string of punts back to the Cavaliers. The half provided a small respite from the onslaught. Once the teams came back onto the field, UVA continued scoring, separating from their opponent, and salting the game away. After a second interception by the Hokies, the UVA Varsity put their final three points on the board. Virginia Tech scored their only points on a long touchdown pass that ended the scoring for the night. The Commonwealth Cup was commandeered and corralled by the Cavaliers.

RAGIN’ CAJUNS RUIN WEARY WARHAWKS

November 29th, 2025 - Lafayette, LA

When the schools of Louisiana get together on the field, families are torn, battle lines are drawn, and the games take on a deeper meaning for the Pelican State. The University of Louisiana, at Lafayette and the University of Louisiana, at Monroe play in the Battle of the Bayou. The game began in emphatic fashion with the Ragin’ Cajuns taking the opening kickoff return for a touchdown. The Warhawks sought to defend their honor and, in a blistering four-play drive, responded with their own touchdown. ULM subsequently missed their point after attempt. Once the Cajuns got the ball back, their drive stalled, and a punt ensued. The visiting team went the length of the field again and scored another touchdown, this time nailing the point after. Before the quarter ended, the Warhawks fumbled the ball away, and the home team cashed that in for a touchdown and the lead. Before the end of the half, both teams miss field goals, and the ULM offense gets stopped on downs. The Cajuns capitalize by making a field goal for a 17-13 lead going into the break. The second half started with four consecutive punts from the teams combined. After the punting ended, the teams scored on the next four drives: two touchdowns for ULM and a touchdown and field goal from Louisiana. With the game tied, the Warhawks were driving for the win, but time expired in regulation. In overtime, the ULM offense gave the ball away on their drive via an interception. The Ragin’ Cajuns ended the game on a field goal and claimed the rivalry for this season.

DELTA DEVILS DAZZLE, RUNOFF RATTLERS

November 29th, 2025 - Itta Bena, MS

The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University have a proud school that loves their football team. Their opponent today, Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, boasts the same. The game they played would become a barnburner that baked the fans as the teams scored points at will and consistently. The game began with calamity, as the Delta Devils gave the ball away on an interception on their opening drive. No harm was done, as their defense forced a punt. The teams then proceeded to punt the ball back and forth until the Rattlers ended the stalemate with a touchdown. In the second quarter, MVSU tied the score with their first touchdown. Before the half, the teams would trade scores and go to the break with FAMU leading 17-14. Once the teams got their rest, the bands stole the show. The MVSU “Mean Green Marching Machine” took the field and produced an experience for the fans that blew their minds. The FAMU “Marching 100” then shook the stars above with their sounds. The second half commenced with more scoring; the teams each put a touchdown on the board. When the defenses finally got back from halftime themselves, each time they were forced to punt, and the Rattlers gave the ball away on an interception of their own. The Delta Devils then scored a touchdown to make the Rattlers pay. In the final period, the FAMU offense bared their fangs and scored their final touchdown, taking a tenuous lead. After a Devil punt, their MVSU defense forced another interception, and their offense made it count, scoring the final points of the game. With time running out, FAMU, in desperation, had one final turnover, an interception that ruined a promising drive, giving the Delta Devils the ball, and the home team wound down the clock.

PENN STATE PERSERVERES PAST PLUCKY PERSISENT SCARLET KNIGHTS

November 29th, 2025 - Piscataway, NJ

In a battle for bowl eligibility, the Penn State platoon paraded up to Piscataway to wage war against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Rutgers roared right from the opening whistle. Athan Kaliakmanis commanded the crimson-clad offense with calculated precision and consecutive long completions to catapult the Knights ahead. Penn State punched back promptly with back-to-back scoring surges, but Rutgers refused to relent. The total was tied up with two scores each as the timer ticked to 0 seconds in the first quarter. The power pair both padded their points by punching into the end zone again before Penn State pulled ahead with a 31-yard field goal to end the half 24-21.

The clashing crews continued to contribute to the scoreboard, crossing the goal line and catapulting over the crossbar. Rutgers reclaimed their reigning rank right before catastrophe came calling. The Knights were positioned perfectly to potentially put the game away when Kaliakmanis mishandled a snap. The ball bounced bizarrely, and Nittany Lion linebacker Amare Campbell capitalized, collecting the fumble and racing 61 yards with a convoy of blockers to the end zone. The stunning scoop-and-score swung the game completely, giving Penn State a 40-36 advantage. Rutgers rallied for one more run but couldn’t conquer the crushing comeback. Penn State’s defense delivered a decisive fourth-down stop to preserve the precarious lead, allowing the Nittany Lions to run out the remaining clock. Penn State became bowl eligible with their third straight triumph, salvaging a season that started with six-straight Big Ten losses. They extended their extraordinary eighteen-game winning streak against the Scarlet Knights, but Rutgers refused to retreat quietly into the night with a sensational offensive showing, scoring the most points ever against Penn State in the 35-game series.
