A Record Setting Day (We Think) For Women in College Football
Our Canadian Correspondent Joey had a question and we (possibly*) have an answer. So, Joey decided to write about the historic day.
Women scored 19 points in College Football on Saturday October 18th, 2025. To our knowledge, this is the highest scoring day for women in College football history. Manitoba’s Maya Turner scoring a perfect 15 points across 4 field goal attempts and 3 extra points, and Mississippi Valley State’s Nina Schiks converting all 4 of her extra points.
Both players have taken interesting journeys in their college sports careers, where so many dominoes had to fall for them to take part in this historic day.
Maya Turner of Maple Grove, Minnesota, never expected to end up in Winnipeg. Especially in 2021, when she was on scholarship as a D1 soccer player at Loyola Chicago, but while with the Ramblers, she saw very little action and eventually decided to leave the team. Staying at Loyola Chicago as a regular student, she stumbled across Loyola Chicago’s club football team and decided to give it a go. After impressing there, she decided to look for opportunities in college football. Her tape ended up on the desk of Manitoba head coach Brian Dobie, who called her up to Manitoba for an in-person visit and workout. According to Dobie, Turner earned herself a spot on the team within the first 10 minutes. After redshirting in 2022 and being the backup to start 2023, Turner won the starting job before their Week 4 game against Regina; in that game she went 2/2, including hitting the game-winning field goal in double overtime.

She’s been the starter since, and she’s been no gimmick. She finished 2023 going 9/12 with a long of 48 and going a perfect 14/14 on extra points. In 2024 she went 12/16 with another long of 48 yards and a perfect 24/24 on extra points. This was good enough to be named to the All-Conference team as the kicker, and Manitoba went to the playoffs. With one game to go in the regular season this year, she’s 8/10 with a long of 34, and still has not missed an extra point for her entire career, this year 16/16 so far. Tape exists of her hitting 60-yarders in practice. She is a legitimate CFL prospect, especially as a junior, with another full year left to put some more range on tape.

Mississippi Valley State’s Nina Schiks has taken an even more circuitous path to college football. From Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands, she is only the 2nd person from the Netherlands to play FCS football after Idaho State legend, punter Case De Bruijn, and that may be the least interesting thing about her.
Schiks was recruited to MVSU as a soccer defender from Borussia Mönchengladbach, which may be the strangest transfer in soccer history. While at MVSU, the tennis team invited her to train with them in the spring for extra conditioning. She ended up making the tennis team despite having no tennis experience. Entering this season, the MVSU Women’s Soccer team had a serious problem: players were dropping from injuries left and right. After a few games with a skeleton crew being mostly non-competitive, the MVSU Women’s Soccer program forfeited the rest of their games for the season and went on temporary hiatus. The remaining players, which included 4 other foreign nationals, would have to sit out the rest of the season. Some stayed on campus; others didn’t.
Schiks, roughly 5000 miles from home, decided to stay in Itta Bena. With nothing else to do, she remembered attending an MVSU football game the season before and thought, “That seems easy; I’ll do that,” and proceeded to walk on to MVSU’s football team and became their 2nd string kicker.

Senior Marko Jovisic has been lights out for the Delta Devils this season, making all 9 field goal attempts and making all 5 extra points. Yes, that’s 5 extra points all season going into this week. It has not been an ideal season for the MVSU Delta Devils.
However, the lowly Lincoln (CA) Oaklanders came to town for Homecoming this week, and after getting out to a 21-0 lead at half, the Delta Devils gave Jovisic a rest for the rest of the night and put in Schiks. The three-sport athlete (female Bo Jackson?) was perfect, hitting all 4 extra points in what became a 49-0 win for MVSU. With Schiks only a sophomore and Jovisic a Senior, Schiks could kick her way into the starting job for next season at MVSU. That is unless she hits the portal looking for a new soccer, tennis, and football team. Can she attend three universities at once?

What may be most impressive about the high score for women being set on Saturday is that both women have the chance to return next year, and if both continue improving at this pace, especially since both had virtually no football experience before their first tryouts, this record could be shattered several times next year.
Here is some video of Nina’s performance.
